Judgment Day (Or Not)

As an unofficial encore to Captain Marvel's role as chairwoman of the Avengers during writer Roger Stern's run on the title, those of you who have followed Stern's Marvel work and were fans as well of either The Avengers or X-Men might have caught the four-issue limited series The X-Men vs. the Avengers from mid-1987, which Stern would write ¾ of (at which time a different writer/artist team would take the reins of the story for its conclusion). The series takes place roughly between the time Captain Marvel accepts Captain America's nomination for the team's leadership position, and the Avengers' mission to Olympus which would conclude Stern's work on the book. The true focus of the series, however, would prove to be Magneto, the Master of Magnetism--and, more specifically, the resolution of the Paris trial which had been convened to hold him accountable for past crimes against the human race.

Yet the prelude to this story occurs years earlier, with the explosive arrival of an alien we would come to know in the New Mutants as Warlock.

Magneto survives the impact, thanks to the ministrations of Lee Forrester, who fishes him out of the ocean and brings him to the island where he once fought a pitched battle with the X-Men--the repercussions of which led, in part, to his trial. As for his asteroid, two sizable parts of it survive their fall to Earth a few years later, and draw the interest of not only Magneto but three super-teams which would vie to decide his ultimate fate.

A Christmas Skinflint

Having Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson play the character of Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol" is such a natural fit that I'm surprised no one thought of it until 2004. That turned out to be writer Tom DeFalco, who with artist Takeshi Miyazawa fashioned a (what else?) Christmas tale for inclusion in that year's Holiday Special, where the day of Jameson's office Christmas party coincides with a battle taking place on the docks between the Avengers and a grouping of multiple villains (among them the Wrecking Crew and the Absorbing Man), the repercussions of which could prove devastating if it should go against the heroes who have assembled to deal with the threat. And Jameson? While the Bugle's staff is on the job, and reporter Ben Urich and freelance photog Peter Parker will be on their way to the docks to cover the story, Jameson will find himself preoccupied on the sidelines of his office.

For now, however, Jameson is focusing his attention on his workers' party preparations--and, as we saw in another gathering which Jameson hosted, it's clear that this man is just as magnanimous as ever when it comes to the spirit of giving and his ability to think of others.

It seems that Jameson's reputation as a "skinflint" remains intact.

When news breaks of the dockside battle, and his people pivot from their holiday cheer to putting together coverage of the developing story, Jameson slips away to his office for a nap--only to soon discover that a former acquaintance, like Jacob Marley, isn't quite as "dead as a door-nail."*

*"Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail."

Since that first messenger that "Osborn" spoke of will be the Ghost of Christmas Past, how fitting that the ghost taking Jameson on a tour of his earlier days is represented by Captain America, a man who at one point or another has been haunted by his own past. Here, we cover ground that I don't recall any readers being privy to--for while we're aware of Jameson's son, John, we've never learned of the man's first marriage, his childhood, or, if we're to believe DeFalco, the circumstances which led Jameson to despise the heroes that he once idolized as a boy.

("Cap" also presents to Jameson a rather awkward cameo by the X-Men, which has little of substance to add to this story except a repetition of the distrust which Jameson holds for those in costume.)

From that sad and telling point in Jameson's life, we segue to the Ghost of Christmas Present, given form by the Thing. It's a curious choice; though while there's no reason to indicate why he makes an appropriate guide for Jameson when viewing present events, there's also no reason why not to pick Ben Grimm from whatever choices were available. On this jaunt, following a stop at the Parker home, Jameson, as before, will become similarly disturbed by what he's shown--perhaps because what he's seeing is occurring in real time.

And finally, the Ghost of Christmas Future. Take a guess as to who that will be:

Grimly, we learn with Jameson the series of events which took place after the Avengers' battle--one that didn't go at all well for them, or for those who lived in the times which followed.

As is evident, Jameson has literally had a wake-up call--and if someone as cynical as J. Jonah Jameson can have an epiphany during the holidays, there's hope for every one of us. As for the employees of the Daily Bugle, their party has even more cause for celebration this year.

Don't worry, Jameson will get over his sticker shock at this shindig's price tag--and just in time for a group shot which delivers a sentiment meant for every one of you.

'Tis The Season To Be A Secret Invader...

Happy holidays, everyone!

But not everyone is feeling the holiday cheer. For instance, meet dismayed Daily Bugle reporter Lester (we're never told the poor man's last name), who on Christmas Eve finds himself sitting across the desk from his editor, Irving Griffen, and receiving some very jarring news under the circumstances. Nevertheless, he also receives a deadline--and to comply with Griffen's ultimatum magnanimous offer of continued employment, he ends up tapping a very special source who could be his best chance for meeting that deadline before the axe falls.

The year is 2007, just when Marvel's books are beginning to display signs of the company's Secret Invasion crossover event. From what we'll see of Lester's, er, canvassing, you would think the Skrulls would certainly make seizing this galaxy-spanning teleportation device (!!) which Reed has whipped up (under his own deadline from S.H.I.E.L.D.) a priority over their infiltration plans; but fortunately for Lester, he's left unhindered to research his story and report what meaning Christmas holds for other individuals, races, and, in some cases, species.

(Not to take this frolic by writer Mike Carey too seriously, but no, I don't know why Reed would object to his comment about reaching out to people during Christmas being on the record. Anyone care to hazard a guess?)

Finally, Lester has what he needs and (presumably) meets his deadline with Griffen. No doubt Lester's elation at pleasing his boss (and keeping his job) kept him from noticing the curious change in Griffen's desk name plate--evidence of a still-developing story that would have ramifications for future Christmases as well as any other traditions which the human race held dear.

Looks like we can't count on the Bugle worker with spider-sense to blow the lid on this.

We Interrupt This Blog...

The PPC will be taking a break this week as well as January 1 to celebrate the holidays. Thanks to everyone who's stopped by and made 2017 such a fun year to dig through Marvel's classic comics and dust them off for new readers as well as those who still remember them so well. It's a pleasure sharing the memories with you!

See you in 2018!

(And a happy belated birthday to Franklin Richards--still young at heart at *gulp* 49!)

The Naughty Avengers!

One Christmas, a young and gifted engineer named Virgie Hanlon was spending the holidays in her lab, putting the final touches on a project that was more than likely inspired by an incident that occurred when she was just eight years old. Virgie has grown to be capable and reasonably stable, yet also alone and isolated; and as the narrative of her story suggests, she might succeed one day in shaking off her doldrums on her own and moving on with her life. But for now, as we'll see, her talents will inadvertently unleash a very great danger in the midst of a season of joy.

Yikes! It looks like the Avengers are about to get their stockings stuffed!

Rocketing Your Way From The North Pole!

As we've seen before, the Illuminati have the best of intentions, but are generally lousy when it comes to their execution; yet you'd think that they could at least get Christmas right, wouldn't you? Still, when Santa Claus comes asking for a favor, it's very difficult to turn the old boy down in his hour of need--and when his reindeer are unavailable to provide his crucial transportation on Christmas Eve, the Illuminati come up with the power he'll need to fulfill his annual commitment.

Unfortunately, as usual, they go a little overboard--and Santa is provided the means to reshape the universe. Well, you know what they say about absolute power...

All the resources of Charles Xavier, Mister Fantastic, the Sub-Mariner, Dr. Strange, Black Bolt, and Iron Man might be needed in order to defeat the awesome powers of the Infinity Gems when wielded by "Dark Santa" here. Thank goodness these men never end up using all their resources, because we'd really be in trouble then. Instead, Santa is brought down by that most powerful of wintertime weapons--a hurled snowball.

If Iron Man chimes in with a way to handle a problem, it's usually time for the rest of us to head for the hills, as a rule. But this time he might be onto something!

Come on--it was only a matter of time before Tony Stark took over Christmas, right?
