While Roth (a/k/a Jay Gavin) had a distinguished run on X-Men, my impression has been that his work was unsung on the book (though admittedly I only caught up on X-Men issues through reprints and didn't have access to any letters pages that might have sung his praises). True, his characters generally had the same facial features, and he usually drew the Beast as something of a troll, always crouched or hunched over; but aside from those minor items in need of improvement, I found his X-Men work easy to follow and far from the worst the mag ever offered. Strangely, Roy Thomas found Roth's work unsuitable for X-Men, yet apparently had no problem with Don Heck's tenure on the book--something I would find astonishing if confirmed.
Comicsfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10064955427593820783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4142199900369238852.post-67799275285008794692015-10-30T10:05:08.416-04:002015-10-30T10:05:08.416-04:00Nice textbook comparison today..., very vividly sh...Nice textbook comparison today..., very vividly shows contrasting styles.

The Kane covers, as most in that early Bronze Era, have no visual flow. The beams in this example totally throw the overall image off, and you really don't have a dramatic sense of impending danger., it's just too busy.

To me, a rule of thumb is to not have more than one figure in movement, while others react or remain stationary.., evident on ish 26's cover. Again, the multiple beams on the reprint cover nullifies the pacing.

Totally agreed on the more artistic original cover. I'm not an X-Men fan at all, but I will spend $$ on great VF condition iconic covers, and that ish 26 certainly qualifies.david_bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00218727673816200051noreply@blogger.com
